The placenta is the lifegiving organ that supports your baby as it grows and develops in the womb. And although many consider the placenta’s work to be done once the baby is born, it can continue to provide support and nourishment to the mother.
As a placenta specialist, I allow mothers to take advantage of the nourishing powers of the placenta in the postpartum period by preparing the placenta for consumption as a dietary supplement.
How It Works:
Encapsulation works by providing a uniquely tailored supplemental source of hormones, vitamins, and minerals for the mother in the postpartum period. By replenishing these hormones, vitamins, and minerals, the mother assists her body in hormonal, emotional, and physical recovery and can often circumvent or lessen the severity of many common postpartum struggles.
The first aim of encapsulation and consumption of placenta (placentophagy) is to supply mother with the corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), which the placenta had been releasing at high levels during the last trimester of pregnancy. This high level of production by the placenta naturally suppresses the mother’s hypothalamus from producing its own CRH. CRH is normally released by the hypothalamus as a stress response to help the body deal with discomforts, pain, etc. CRH production by the placenta peaks at the onset of labor in response to the physical stress of childbirth to help the body cope with the discomforts and pains.
After the birth of the placenta, the mother’s body is no longer receiving these high levels of CRH. And since her hypothalamus’s natural production was suppressed, pain and emotional distress can increase. It takes time for the body to naturally increase the hypothalamus’s CRH production again. In the meantime, the postpartum mother often experiences hormonal imbalance causing emotional instability, decreased energy, decreased healing and recovery, etc.. Other hormones such as estrogen, estrodiol, and progesterone also decrease in the maternal body after birth and can dramatically affect thyroid function, emotional stability, and overall hormone balance.
Many women, especially those with a personal or familial history of depression or thyroid issues, are not able to recover from these imbalances and may suffer postpartum blues, depression, psychosis, lactation issues, and/or a wide range of other ailments. By consuming the placenta after birth, the mother is able to provide her body with a stimulus for her natural production of CRH by the hypothalamus, as well as providing supplemental regulation of other hormones to help her body cope with postpartum discomforts, pains, etc., and recover more speedily.
High levels of iron and vitamin B6 in the placenta also promote improved emotional stability and energy levels during the postpartum period. There is a strong correlation between low iron, fatigue, and postpartum depression, so increased iron is highly desirable.
Many women attest to the benefits of placenta consumption in the postpartum period for mood and emotional stabilization, plentiful milk production, maximized energy, and quick physical recovery. It’s easy to see why when you understand all the nourishment the placenta can provide!
